Description:

A medium-sized nuthatch, typical in shape and behavior. Has uniform undertail-coverts and lacks clearly defined white cheeks. Larger and longer-billed, no white at base of tail. Female underparts are paler, with flanks and undertail-coverts more deep cinnamon, and whitish cheek patch is less clearly defined.


Distribution:

Common resident in the western parts of Diamer district of Gilgit-Baltistan. Favors various deciduous and coniferous habitats with fir, deodar and oak, with some dependence on presence of deciduous broadleaf tree. Breeds at 2100-3300m.


Behavior:

Forages on trunks and larger branches, usually at low levels, and often in understorey or on ground, on fallen and rotten trees and logs and moss-covered boulders. In summer found singly and in pairs; non-breeding season in mixed-species flocks. Food insects, spiders and, especially in winter, seeds and nuts; grit also consumed.
